Batangas is a very rich city. Aside from the Taal volcano that was introduced to us back in our elementary days, mountains and beaches are just scattered around the area. It is one of the best outing destinations in the Philippines for hiking, beaching and sight-seeing.
Recently, I’ve been spending my weekends in Bauan, Batangas but not for those usual chills. This is where skin diving (my new obsession), with Skin Dive Ph, takes place. Check out my first dive with them here: First Dive of a Nonswimmer with Skin Dive Ph
I am not yet a certified freediver, but here are some basic diving tips I learned that I would love to share:
1. Fit. Check your mask, snorkel and fins. First thing you should verify is your comfort. Any feeling of uneasiness is a sign of a future problem if you don’t attend to it now.
2. Keep calm. Tense in your muscles will make you sink. This is a result of panicking, especially for nonswimmers like me, and this even causes drowning.
3. Control your breath. There is no pressure in getting enough air you need before diving. Of course, your goal is to stay underwater long enough so you could explore the world of Spongebob there.
4. Dive like you’re reaching your toes. This is a technique for your 90 degrees duck dive position.
5. Preserve your energy. Refrain from doing unnecessary movements. The more more you move, the less time you could stay underwater.
6. Equalize. When pressure hits your middle ear or even before that happens, you need to equalize. You experience this whenever you’re on an airplane taking off or landing, or in a vehicle going up or downtown. If you cannot equalize, stop and go back to the surface. You don’t want to destroy your hearing.
7. Master your recovery breathing. This is one of the most important skill that you have to learn. You should know how to survive.
